Winona Bishop Obituary

Winona “Noni” Brunty Bishop entered heaven on March 5, 2026, at her home with her loving husband by her side, after a long battle with dementia. She was born in Clear Fork on September 4, 1949, to Jess and Dolly Brunty. Noni was a 1968 graduate of Oceana High School. She then went on to attend Beckley Beauty Academy and work as a hairdresser. She had many jobs throughout her life. She retired from the Wyoming County 911 center, where she was a dispatcher and from Wyoming County Schools, where she was a teacher’s aide in kindergarten and special education. She had a heart for the children she worked with at school. She attended Clearfork Valley Baptist Church, loved Jesus, and knew where she was going when she departed this life. Noni was a strong woman, helping to raise her younger siblings and always stepping up for those in need. She often worked multiple jobs to provide for her family. She was truly our rock. Noni had a big heart and a laugh like no other. She loved to laugh and make others laugh. There are many stories about her jokes and pranks. She enjoyed working in her beautiful flower garden in the summer, crafting, and scrapbooking. Her cooking was known near and far. She fed not only her family, but often the entire neighborhood. Her spaghetti, chili, and chicken and dumplings were everyone’s favorites, and will never be matched. The thing she loved the most was her family. She was the most loving and devoted wife, mom, and mawmaw. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was thrilled when her granddaughter, J, was born on her birthday.

In addition to her parents, Noni is preceded in death by her grandparents Willie and Lena Brunty and Dee and Nellie Conley, twin brothers Willard and Willis Brunty, and a brother-in-law, David League, Sr.

Noni is survived by her husband, caregiver, and love of her life, Danny Bishop; one daughter, Danielle Bishop; two grandchildren: Owen Hamon and Jessalynn “J”. Three sisters: Gloria League, Lisa Jude and her husband Rick, and Chris Brunty; nieces: Leigh Womble, Karen Forshee, Jessica League, Rebekah Jude, Tara Jude, and Emily Cozort; nephews: David League Jr., Erick Jude, Drake Jude, and Tanner Adkins. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Southern WV, especially Dena, Shana, Molly, and Amy. Their care and compassion goes above and beyond. Thank you to Renegade Pharmacy. Devonna and the people there were always so kind and helpful. We would also like to give special thanks to Noni’s niece, Rebekah. She was there every step of the way and always made sure Noni was comfortable and taken care of, all while taking care of us as well.

A celebration of Noni’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at 6:00pm at Evans-Calfee Funeral Service in Oceana.  Friends may gather with the family from 4:00-6:00pm prior to the service on Tuesday.  To leave online condolences and other expressions of sympathy for the family, please visit Noni’s Tribute page on our website.
