Martha J Clay

Martha Jane Clay, 94, went to her heavenly home Sunday, February 16, 2025.

She was born November 28, 1930, in Saulsville, WV to the late Amos Johnson Shumate and Helen Pendry Shumate.

Martha was a longtime member of Saulsville Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Aide. Famous for her peanut butter fudge and coconut cream pies, she loved to cook for her family and friends. When she wasn’t in the kitchen cooking up one of her specialties, she enjoyed quilting and spending time working in her flower garden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of fifty-seven years, Stuart Clay and five brothers, and son-in-law Shawn Spears. 

Martha will be so missed by so many. Those left to cherish her memory are her seven children, Kenneth Clay and wife Dawn, Michael Clay and wife Victoria, Carl Clay and wife Nancy, Roger Clay and wife Mary, Randy Clay and Sasja, Debbie Clay and Margie Spears; her eleven grandchildren, Rene Davidson and husband Ryan, Byron Clay, Aaron Cook and Rachel, Jason Spears and wife Lydia, Aleisha Tuck her husband Scott, Brittany Besl and husband Joey, Marissa Bailey, Michael Hatfield, Cody Spears and Fiancé Lexie, Cpl. Eli Clay, US Marines and his wife Samantha, and Ivan Clay; eighteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her brother, David Shumate; two sisters, Annette Walk and Yvonne Clay; countless nieces and nephews; numerous treasured friends; and her church family.
