Magdalene Scalf Obituary

Magdalene Scalf, 95 of Oceana, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at her home following an extended illness.

Born January 3, 1930, in Coal Run, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Leonard Steffey and Annie Fife Steffey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years Earl Jason Scalf; son, Jerry Scalf and his wife Sharon; brothers, Claude, Leonard Jr., Charley, Pitts, James, and Leon; sisters, Harriet Dean, Naomi Steffey, May Fern Worrix, Martha Ellen Elkins, Bonnie Adkins, Loretta Harvel, Helen Smith, and Hannah Whisenant.

Magdalene was a member of Oceana Church of Christ and attended faithfully until her health declined. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Magdalene had a heart of gold and would go out of her way to make sure her family was well taken care of.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Ruth Besenyei and husband Joe of Princeton, WV, Susie Walker and husband Raymond of Oceana; sisters, Eulah Sarter of Sesser, IL, Sheila Kaye Horton of Andersonville, TN; grandchildren, Thomas Jason Scalf and wife Amanda of Dayton, OH, Eric Besenyei and wife Alicia of Roanoke, VA, Jodi Besenyei of Glade Springs, WV, Raelena Robertson of Oceana, Marshall Walker and companion, Amanda Addair of Oceana; great grandchildren, Cameron Brooke Rine, Cruz Robertson, Kam Besenyei, Jason Scott Scalf; and a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends.

In keeping with Magdalene’s final wishes, services will be held privately by her family. She will be laid to rest with her husband at Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Matheny.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation and gratitude to her Caretakers and Hospice of Southern West Virginia for their care and compassion.
