Joe Goode Obituary

Lifelong Bear Hole Road resident, Joe R. Goode of Pineville passed away on July 29, 2024, at the age of 92.

Born May 20, 1932, Joe was the son of the late Virgil and Vena Vance Goode.

Joe attended Pineville High School and the Wyoming County Vocational Center.

He worked for the transportation department of Wyoming County Schools for thirty-eight years and retired as the shop foreman in 1998. After retiring, Joe took a ten-year sabbatical during which he rode ATVs with friends and family, enjoyed bird watching through a large picture window in his favorite room of the house and completed several home projects.  More than anything, he missed working.

When the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System opened the Pinnacle Creek Trailhead, Joe seized the opportunity for yet another act. During his decade-long tenure with the trail system, he learned to operate a credit card machine and a fax machine, all while in his seventies! Joe thoroughly enjoyed interacting with trail riders who visited the trailhead office to buy passes or souvenirs. He was especially curious to learn where they were from and how far they had travelled.

During his spare time, Joe pursued a variety of hobbies. In his younger years, he bred and raised beagles and enjoyed rabbit hunting. As he got older, he transitioned to deer and then turkey hunting. He also loved being in the woods in the spring in hopes of getting himself a spring gobbler. As mentioned before, Joe was also an avid ATV enthusiast, he enjoyed riding in the mountains of southern West Virginia. Joe simply loved being outside, even if only sitting under his carport watching cars go by or solving a word search puzzle.

Joe had a quiet personality, but he sometimes loved to tell stories and often cracked himself up while doing so. His laughter was so pure and genuine that he often had everyone else laughing as well, not so much because the story was funny, but because his laughter was contagious. His departure from this life leaves a void that will never be filled.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by three siblings: Fred Goode, Louise Baugess, and R. Wayne Goode.

Joe is survived by his wife of seventy-three years, Geneva Adams Goode; his three children: Peggy Mullins and husband Silas, Jerry Goode, and Teresa “Jane” Weaver and husband Gary, all of Pineville; and his only grandchild, Ericka Blankenship and her husband Robert Buehner of Louisville, KY.  He is also survived by his sister, Frances Byrd of Pineville, and sisters-in-law, Vonnie “Bonnie” Bishop of Glover and Betty Rose and husband Norman “Buddy” of Cumming, GA.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of Wyoming Healthcare in New Richmond for the care Joe received during the past year.
