Earl Ray Shields, 70 transitioned peacefully on Monday, May 15, 2023 in the comfort of his home and in the presence of his family and adored pets.
Earl was born to Elda Mae Shields and Andrew Don Shields on January 1, 1953. In his life, Earl was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a cherished grandfather. He was a hard-working man, a provider, a teacher and a role model. He was patient, kind, strong but soft, and stern but forgiving. In all respects, Earl embodied what it meant to be a "good man."
Earl was a bona fide coal miner, having worked under the mountains of West Virginia as a Fire Boss and Shift Foreman for over 30 years, returning home late at night, covered in coal dust - his signature dirty face certainly a memory all close to him will recall. He was a car enthusiast, having raced, built, and repaired many cars in his lifetime, and shared his joy and expertise with his family and friends. Later in life, he enjoyed spending his time helping others to complete their projects, giving his labor and wisdom, often with jokes and laughter to lighten the load.
Earl leaves a legacy of love and memories that will be forever cherished by his family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Rhonda Sue Shields, his children, Teresa and her husband Robbie Hatfield, Heather and her husband Will McCall, Leah Hill, and his daughter in law Angie Hatfield. His beloved grandchildren James Phillips, Dalton and Lilly Hill, Austin, Hailey and Wyatt McCall, Logan Hatfield, Katrina and Tyler Hatfield, his great-grandchildren Gracie, Lillian, Tommy, Raelynn, and Baron, his sister Sandra and her husband Nelson Lusk, his brother Charles and his wife Deanna Shields.
He was preceded in death by his only son Jamey Phillips.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on that will be announced at a later date.
