Clara Smith Obituary

BAILEYSVILLE—Clara Mae Spratt Smith, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 28, 2021, following a short illness.  Born on January 19, 1943 in Sun Hill, WV, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Minnie Toler Spratt.

In addition to her parents, Clara was welcomed to her heavenly home by all of her siblings:  Rhannis Spratt (Annis), Betty Harvey (Roger), Deloris Blankenship (James), and Faye Burrell, and one brother-in-law, Ralph Thomas.

Clara was a 1963 graduate of Baileysville High School and served as a kindergarten aide for the Wyoming County Board of Education for 36 years.  She married her beloved husband, Clifton “Butch” Smith, in 1972 and settled in Baileysville, WV.   The two were happily married for 48 years and 10 months.

Clara was a devoted wife, sister, aunt, friend, and educator who never met a stranger and always went out of her way to help those in need.   She trusted in Jesus Christ as her personal savior and was beloved by all who knew her.

Clara enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, decorating for the holidays, and visiting with family and friends.   She was well-known for her delicious spaghetti, fried pies, and beautiful handmade quilts.

In addition to her husband, those left to cherish her memory include a brother-in-law, Harless Burrell, of Brenton, a sister-in-law, Mary Thomas, of Charlotte, NC, a brother-in-law, Earl Smith and wife, Joyce, of Clear Fork, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, July 1st, 2021, at Evans-Calfee Funeral Home in Oceana, WV, with Reverends Tommy Knotts and Michael Knotts officiating.   Friends may gather two hours prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 am.   Pallbearers will be nephews and friends.  Clara will be laid to rest at Palm Memorial Gardens in Matheny, WV.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity.
